Wish Us Luck!

Turkmenistan is routinely ranked right up there with North Korea as one of the most repressive countries on earth.

We head there in a few hours.

Our driver on this side of the border will watch from a parking space in Uzbekistan to make sure we emerge from immigration on the other side. Then he will turn back to Bukhara.

Theoretically, our Turkmen driver will be waiting to take over from there. Communications with Turkmenistan being what they are, we’ve been unable contact him.

Media is tightly controlled there. We don’t expect to have WhatsApp or SMS or Facebook, and doubtless won’t have communications of any kind on our camp-out at a place called — we are not making this up — the Doorway to Hell.

Foreign visitors to Turkmenistan are estimated to number about 10,000 a year. Wish us luck becoming two of them.

Partout is likely to be on hiatus until we re-emerge, but anything is possible when you head into the unknown.

  1. I love your page and are looking forward to read about your experience in Turkmenistan. I happenned to be there dozens of times in the early 2000’s as the company I was employed by was renovating and expanding their Turkmenbashi refinery. Don’t miss their beautiful horses, Ak Altun.
